Sunday night around 20.00 surrounded by family and friends Joe Burke breathed his last breath.and so passed on to gardens fair and peace and silence eternally.
Joe was a Marlfielder from his instep to the crown of his head and lived much of his live in the 'Village' though he emigrated to the heights of Highfield,in Clonmel later in life.
He was a community activist of a very high calibre with an energy level few would or could emulate.
I first met Joe with his wife,Clare at the founding of the Two Bridges Partnership around 2004.The group was/is an amalgam of Voluntary groups in Clonmel with Marlfield Village Association.Details of the work of the group can be found elsewhere on this blog.
2013 saw the culmination of a major project to re-build the boundary wall where collapse had occurred, repair and repointing, and lowering the height of the wall along it's entire length.
The photos above show Joe and John Landy engaged in this work. When next you walk the walks at the Rock, breathe a sigh of thanks for Joe in this season "..of mists and mellow fruitfulness".
