Now that access to Willow Island is possible with the lifting of the flood gates I rambled down there through Old Lane some days ago.The ruin that is Suir Island House stands forlornly,a legacy of neglect and pure vandalism.
To the right stands a majestic lime at the top of the former head-race,tree slowly budding and soon to leaf.Beyond the gates above the weir stands a mighty Holm-0ak now, sadly falling away,a huge bough lying on the ground- natural decay.
Great to report that plans are afoot to instal a Kayak pass at Lady Blessington's Weir,as well as rehabilitation works and Slalom Course. This will open up the river within the town and provide an amenity and adventure activity for all ages.
All involved are to be congratulated for their vision and persistence over the years.
Maybe in the fullness of time the neglected waterway above may become a beginners slalom pool for example or a novice fishing pond.
